Because cases of poisoning are observed rarely, veterinary practitioners have only limited knowledge of clinical toxicology and may face considerable problems in handling toxicological emergencies. In this report, we describe a novel decision support system for the management of poisonings in companion animals that provides rapid access to the current knowledge of clinical toxicology. For that purpose, relevant reports from the peer-reviewed literature were evaluated and organised according to the requirements of a structured database. The information provided for each toxic substance includes a summary of its chemical and physical properties, sources, commercial uses or natural occurrences, toxicokinetic data, mechanisms of action, threshold doses, clinical symptoms with brief case reports, sampling and analytical results, post-mortem findings, differential diagnoses, therapeutic guidelines and references to the literature. This decision support system has been programmed with two user-friendly search functions: a search tool that allows to choose clinical symptoms, and another function that serves to find a substance using its chemical name, the class of compounds to wich it belongs, a possible source or one of its main applications. Vergiftungsfälle sind in der Praxis zwar selten, doch handelt es sich meist um lebensbedrohliche Notfallsituationen, die eine gezielte und schnelle Behandlung erfordern. Um die Tierärzteschaft bei Vergiftungsfällen zu unterstützen, wurde eine elektronische Entscheidungshilfe geschaffen, die rund um die Uhr einen raschen Zugriff auf das aktuelle Wissen der klinischen Toxikologie beim Kleintier erlaubt. Dieses Informationssystem basiert auf der verfügbaren Fachliteratur, die kritisch ausgewertet und deren wesentlichen Aussagen strukturiert in die Datenbank eingebracht wurden. Von jeder Substanzgruppe sind die chemisch-physikalischen Eigenschaften, Quellen bzw. Anwendungsformen, Toxikokinetik und -dynamik, toxische Grenzdosen, Vergiftungssymptome mit Fallbeispielen, Differentialdiagnosen, Sektionsbefunde, Probenentnahme und Diagnostik, therapeutischen Richtlinien, sowie ein Literaturverzeichnis aufgeführt. Unterschiedliche Suchprogramme gewährleisten einen benutzerfreundlichen Zugang entweder durch die Auswahl der klinischen Befunde aus einem breiten Symptomenkatalog oder durch die Eingabe der chemischen Bezeichnung, Substanzgruppe, Quelle oder des Verwendungszwecks eines Giftstoffes. Les cas d´intoxications sont certes rares en pratique mais il s´agit le plus souvent de situations d´urgences vitales qui nécessitent un traitement ciblé et rapide. Pour aider les vétérinaires confrontés à des cas d´intoxication, il a été développé un programme d´aide à la décision qui permet, en tout temps, d´accéder rapidement aux connaissances actuelles de la toxicologie clinique des petits animaux. Ce système de renseignements se base sur la littérature spécifique à disposition qui a été examinée de façon critique et dont les points les plus importants ont été introduits de façon structurée dans la banque de données. On trouve, pour chaque groupe de substances, ses propriétés physico-chimiques, respectivement sa forme d´application, sa toxicocinétique et sa toxicodynamique, ses doses toxiques limites, les symptômes d´intoxication avec des exemples de cas, les diagnostiques différentiels, les résultats d´autopsies, le prélèvement d´échantillons et le diagnostic, les lignes thérapeutiques directrices ainsi qu´une bibliographie. Divers programmes de recherches permettent un accès convivial, soit par le choix de symptômes cliniques sur la base d´un large catalogue, soit par l´introduction de la dénomination chimique du groupe de substances, de la source ou de l´utilisation d´un toxique. Casi di avvelenamento sono certamente rari ma nel qual caso la situazione diventa un´emergenza che mette in pericolo la vite e che esige cure mirate e veloci. Per sostenere i veterinari nei casi di avvelenamento è stato creato un aiuto decisionale su base elettronica che, per 24 ore al giorno 7 giorni su 7, permette un veloce accesso alle conoscenze attuali della tossicologia clinica nei piccoli animali. Questo sistema informativo si basa sulla letteratura specializzata disponibile valutata in modo critico. Le asserzioni sostanziali qui reperite vengono strutturate e importate nelle banca dati. Le proprietà chimico-fisiche, fonti e forme di utilizzazione, tossicocinetica e tossicodinamica, limite dosaggio tossico, sintomi di avvelenamento con esempi campione, diagnosi differenziale, reperti di autopsia, prelevamento e diagnosi di campioni, direttive terapeutiche e un indice bibliografico sono citati per ogni gruppo di sostanze. Diversi sistemi di ricerca garantiscono un utilizzo semplice sia tramite la scelta di reperti clinici tratti da un vasto catalogo di sintomi, sia tramite l´immissione di denominazioni chimiche, gruppi di sostanze, fonti o scopi di utilizzazione della sostanza tossica.
